Nyamira Governor Survives Impeachment
The motion to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo was defeated by 18 members of the County Assembly.A total of 16 members voted in favor of the motion, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to move through with the impeachment.
Esise Ward MCA Josiah Mangera proposed the proposal, which received support from a number of other council members.Mangera charged the Governor with corruption, misusing public funds, and failing to install functional street lights, among other offenses.
Flagging off empty containers posing as prescription drugs and bias in his visits were two other points brought up by the MCA.After serving as John Nyagarama’s deputy and winning the seat in the general elections of 2022 against Walter Nyambati of the UDA, Governor Nyaribo succeeded him.
The bulk of the Nyamira County Assembly members, including the governor of Nyamira, are UPA supporters. The majority (UPA) has six members, followed by ODM with four members, Jubilee with two members, and Ford Kenya with two members in the Assembly, which has 20 elected MCAs and 15 nominated MCAs.
George Abuga, the MCA for the Bogichora ward, asked the members to cast their votes in private before the assembly started voting.According to Township Ward MCA Duke Masira, “We as MCAs pass budgets with proposals, but the Governor decides which ward receives development.”
The Ekerenyo Ward MCA and the deputy speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly, who supported the impeachment, appreciated the work of the MCAs who voted for and against the resolution.Congratulations to the winning team, however the MCA urged Governor Nyaribo to enhance the quality of the services he provided to Nyamira County’s residents.
