New Fee Increment Proposals for 2024
New Fee Increment Proposals for 2024
Given the recent suggestions for additional costs in the upcoming year, many are now doubting the continuation of free secondary school education. Students have faced difficulties as a result of the government’s change in university funding this year, especially those attending public universities where expensive tuition is a hurdle. Government support for students is now limited to those who can prove they are financially needy, replacing the old standard financing scheme. The suggested fee schedule suggests that secondary schools may be included in this change:
National schools will raise their annual tuition to 73,182 shillings, an increase of up to 19,628 shillings, from the present amount of up to 55,554 shillings. State support will continue to be 22,244 shillings. Significant fee hikes will apply to additional county schools; the present fee structure of 40,000 shillings will be replaced with 25,488 shillings, or 66,023 shillings.
Day schools will now charge 5,372 shillings in fees, while government financing stays at 22,244 shillings. Previously, day schools charged little or nothing at all, with the exception of meal expenditures in select situations.
These tuition increases, coupled with the already exorbitant cost of living, have the potential to make education unaffordable for a large number of students. This is akin to the difficulties seen in colleges, where some students are denied admission because of unpaid balances.
