Police Officer, Student Dead in Baringo Bandit Attack
A student from Kibabii University and a police reserve member were among the two victims killed in a new bandit ambush in Baringo County on Thursday.
Economic activity has been paralyzed as a result of the incident that occurred in Kiriamet village in Baringo North, and residents are lamenting the return of insecurity.
Around 7 o’clock in the evening, the bandits shot and killed the two locals as they were gathering honey. Residents of the region have expressed concerns and are already evacuating as the schools close.
Both Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap and Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi denounced the attack, pointing out that it put the county’s peace and stability in jeopardy. Wilson Chelagat, the head of the region, urged the government to ensure safety by sending out additional police officers.
A few days prior to the bandit attack, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki gave the locals assurances of security, the deployment of officers, and the building of more Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) camps in the region.
The CS also pledged to put a stop to banditry throughout the nation . After establishing an anti-stock theft camp in the historically bandit-prone Mulango district of Isiolo North Sub-County. To handle the crisis, the state has also had to step up its efforts. Deploying more officers, enforcing curfews, and establishing camps.
On September 13, Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) personnel and chiefs from Marakwet, Pokot, and Baringo were given a seven-day deadline to address the security situation in the area. With constant insecurity in the area, Baringo County has been the scene of numerous banditry attacks that have claimed lives.
In an effort to restore order in the county, President William Ruto dispatched 3,000 police officers in August to protect Baringo County. Oversee the repair of 44 schools.
