11 students injured and 2 students dead in a school fire in Masaka
A fire that destroyed their dorm at Kasaana Junior School in Masaka City’s Nyendo-Mukungwe division claimed the lives of two of the students. Eleven students were hurt in the incident that occurred this morning at around 4:00 a.m. Authorities of the school reported that 15 students from top and primary one courses were housed in the dormitory.
Aloysius Ahebwa and Malik Katende have been identified as the deceased. The school matron Christine Adong, Austin Kisembo, Jordan Ssendagire, Arnold Tumwesige, and Sharid Mwanje are among those who have suffered grave injuries. The event was confirmed by acting Greater Masaka Police spokeswoman Jamada Wandera, who blamed a short circuit for it. The two students, he claimed, could not be saved, despite the police fire and rescue team’s rapid arrival on the site to try to save the situation.
Wandera said that the hurt students were taken to different hospitals right away. Dozens of parents hurried to the school shortly after the outbreak and demanded to take their kids home.
The Masaka education officer, Steven Kakeeto, asserted that the school administration could not afford to release the students at this time. He clarified that the matter has been taken over by the city’s education department and security, who are collaborating with the school administration to confirm the causalities and will notify the parents.
The latest incident brings the number of school fire cases reported in Masaka City to two in a period of one month. Early this month Masaka senior secondary school in Masaka city also suffered a fire outbreak that burnt down the school girls’ dormitory and destroyed property worth an estimated value.
