TSC will now hire interns on permanent terms

Junior secondary school (JSS) intern teachers in Kenya will have stable employment since 26,000 of them will be hired permanently and receive pensions beginning in January 2025.

KSh 8.3 billion will be spent on this modification. A KSh 364.910 billion grant from the National Treasury for the Financial Year 2024–2025 will allow the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to continue operating.

The TSC was first given KSh 369.9 billion under the 2024 Budget Policy Statement; however, the tentative budget estimates for 2024–2025 indicate a minor drop to KSh 364.910 billion.

This demonstrates a KSh 5.033 billion drop in recurring spending and a KSh 33 million fall in development spending.

This financial announcement aligns with the continuing rallies by JSS intern teachers, who are demanding permanent employment following an Employment and Labour Relations Court ruling (ELRC).

The court found that their work as interns violated their labor rights because it was different from permanent and pensionable occupations. The teachers have declined to return to the classroom as the second semester gets begun.

For their one-year contracts, intern teachers in JSS are being paid KSh 20,000 in JSS and KSh 15,000 in primary schools. To address the teacher shortage, TSC plans to provide KSh 4.68 billion for the hiring of 20,000 more interns in primary and JSS schools.

TSC has also announced its intention to provide KSh 1 billion to teacher advancement. According to the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), 36,505 instructors were recently promoted to higher grades; this figure is compatible with current spending.

Teachers who had spent years in the same work group found that these achievements improved their career prospects and lifted their morale.

All things considered, the government’s commitment to supporting the education sector by tackling teacher shortages and enhancing working conditions for educators is demonstrated by the budgeted amounts and anticipated hirings.
