Errors in KCPE Exam Results Explained by KNEC
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued information regarding inconsistencies that certain candidates had brought to their attention.
In a statement sent to newsrooms on Saturday, the council stated that it had been notified of appeals regarding several inaccuracies in results obtained using the Ministry of Education’s short code 40054.
KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere said in a statement, “It was brought to the attention of KNEC that results for some candidates had misalignment of the marks and grades in Kiswahili as they were placed at the Kenyan Sign Language.”
Additionally, there have been instances where the grades in Social Studies, Science, and Religious Education have been improperly truncated, lacking the appropriate plus (+) and minus (-) indications.
The examination authority claims that all of the results on its portal are accurate; therefore, the aforementioned issues only affected applicants who attempted to retrieve their results using the SMS short code.
According to Dr. Njengere, this was caused by “configuration issues,” which the council has subsequently brought up with the SMS service provider and swiftly resolved.
The head of the council said, “KNEC also received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili.”
After reviewing every appeal, KNEC discovered that 133 applicants were impacted. All of these issues have been handled, and the relevant updates have been made to the results for the impacted applicants.
Dr. Njengere went on to address the widely circulated rumors about a school where all applicants received 75 points in science, stating that a thorough investigation had revealed no evidence of any kind of institutional misconduct.
The KNEC head pointed out that as science is a multiple-choice exam, candidates could receive the same score.
“Even though it might be assumed that this is an anomaly in the examination, there is insufficient evidence for KNEC to approve the candidate results in the absence of a report substantiating the existence of examination fraud.”
The KNEC Rules of 2015 Legal Notice 131 require that candidates must get their result slips from their respective schools and file any challenges within a 30-day window.
