After days of intense pressure, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has finally moved teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo School in Kakamega. On Thursday, TSC moved 17 tutors in all; the previous day, parents and students had stormed the school and frogmarched the principal.
The school’s dismal result on the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) left the parents displeased.Major teachers’ organizations called the incident an insult to the teachers’ well-being and immediately started lobbying TSC to move the teachers or guarantee their safety.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu led the demands arguing that teachers at the institution and two others were likely to face attacks.”This must stop. Some head teachers and principals have been threatened. It is shameful,” lamented Oyuu.
Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairperson Omboko Milemba had also demanded action against the perpetrators and reinforced security for teachers countrywide. So dire was the situation that KUPPET wanted action taken in a span of less than 24 hours noting that other affected schools were St Teresa’s Bumini and Kabondi Primary School.
He also lamented the excessive workload that Isongo High School teachers were under, trying to meet the needs of more than 850 students.A day later, communities that have been organizing attacks against teachers received a warning from Education CS Ezekiel Machogu.
He said that as school administrators are only a cog in the educational machine and cannot be held entirely accountable for student and pupil performance, it is inappropriate for parents and students to take aim at them.
“We wish to remind communities behind these regrettable attacks that learner achievement in examinations is the reflection of the overall input from all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and candidates themselves,” he said. The CS added that in addition to national exams, TSC uses a range of metrics to assess teachers’ performance.
