HELB Clarifies Rumors on Fund Disbursement
The HELB, or Higher Education Loans Board, has refuted allegations going around regarding a brief halt to student finance disbursements. The government issued an official statement on Wednesday, advising the people to exercise caution and stay away from deceptive and fraudulent schemes.
The message underlined how crucial it is to maintain vigilance, check your sources, and share information responsibly. In particular, HELB addressed a letter that was supposedly signed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and was making the rounds on social media. The letter, dated January 4th, recommended that the government’s financial difficulties warrant a brief suspension of the payout procedure.
In order to reassure students that fund disbursement will continue unhindered, the board made it clear that this letter was fraudulent. Despite this guarantee, a few students expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged wait for payout and raised worries about prior funding delays. They called on the board to accelerate the release of pending funds.
The government unveiled a new method for supporting universities the year before: the Higher Education Financing (HEF) model. In order to increase the number of students who can obtain government support, Education Cabinet Secretary Machogu unveiled HEF in July.
Based on their financial circumstances, students are divided into three groups under this model: the able, the less able, and the vulnerable. A certain amount of government funds is allocated to each group to help them with their academic endeavors. Students who are particularly in need are given a 70% government scholarship plus a 30% loan, whilst vulnerable students receive a 100% government scholarship. In order to allay worries and guarantee correct information about the continuing payout procedure, HELB has clarified.
