Nine local universities are ranked in the top 100 higher education institutions in  the area by the internationally renowned university ranking organization uniRanks. The University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Strathmore University, and Jomo  Kenyatta University of Science and Technology are at the top in Kenya.

Following a thorough evaluation based on four important criteria, the rankings also recognize the accomplishments of Mount Kenya University, United States International University Africa, Egerton University, Moi University, and Kenya Methodist University, placing them among the top-ranked Kenyan universities.

These institutions underwent scrutiny in teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. Additional criteria involved being chartered, licensed, or accredited by the relevant higher education organizations in their respective countries. Moreover, they met the requirement of offering at least a three-year bachelor’s degree or postgraduate master’s or doctoral degree, predominantly in a traditional non-distance education format.

The University of Nairobi notably secured the sixth position in Africa, trailing behind South Africa’s University of Cape Town. The top-ranking African universities overall include the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Stellenbosch, and Egypt’s The American University of Cairo.

The University of Nairobi came in at position 924 globally, whereas the University of Cape Town, situated in South Africa, came in at position 236. These rankings highlight the contributions these Kenyan institutions have made to teaching, research, and global involvement, and they reflect their excellent regional and global performances.
