Kenyan Govt Rewards those who Assist Arrest of Banditry Enablers
On Friday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki declared that the government would launch a scheme that would compensate individuals who help apprehend bandit supporters.
While visiting Posta in Laikipia County, the CS reported that the program promised cash rewards to officers and the public for anyone who assisted the government in apprehending banditti leaders.
The CS also disclosed that as the government steps up its campaign of repression, the identities and descriptions of banditti will be made public in 2024.
“In the coming year, the Interior Ministry of the Government will implement a program to provide financial rewards to brave law enforcement officials and members of the public who successfully apprehend the main organizers, implementers, and supporters of banditry. These individuals’ biographies will be made public across the nation,” Kindiki said.
The CS also sounded a warning to criminal enterprises that are responsible for the deaths and displacement of people as a result of banditry.
”Cattle rustling in Northern Kenya has over the years become an organised criminal enterprise responsible for deaths, destitution and displacement,” he stated.
Kindiki disclosed in his statement that the government’s primary goal was to disrupt and neutralize banditry operations so that their schemes could not be carried out.
Kindiki continued, “By making banditry a painful endeavor, ensuring the recovery of stolen livestock, and rewarding facilitators of recoveries, the Government is sustaining the war on banditry and its perpetrators, enablers, benefactors, and beneficiaries in order to dismantle the infrastructure of cattle rustlers and facilitators.”
As he handed over the overheads of livestock that had been taken and fully recovered, the CS enumerated the government’s actions against banditry.
Along with the cattle, CS Kindiki gave prizes to young people and local leaders who collaborated with the government to guarantee their recovery.
Since taking over the Interior Ministry from Fred Matiang’i, Kindiki has frequented bandit-prone areas to monitor progress as well as boost the morale of security officers deployed in the regions.
Kindiki recently announced a plan by the government to place a bounty on bandit commanders as a new strategy to intensify their crackdown.
