Government Will Step Up Flood Disaster Response, Says Ruto
According to President William Ruto, the heavy rains resulted in the displacement of 36,000 homes and the loss of at least 70 lives.
He pointed out that since the rains would not stop, preparation was necessary in case an emergency arose.
The President noted that Monday’s emergency Cabinet meeting is required due to the severe scenario.
He stated, “This will offer strong intervention mechanisms to help tackle the issue.” He claimed that, particularly with the onboarding of the county administrations, the nation is now better equipped to face the future.
He was giving a speech on Saturday at a meeting with organizations that handle different facets of disaster response at State House in Nairobi.
In order to coordinate reactions, the President declared that a National Disaster Operation Center has been operationalized.
“Sufficient measures have been implemented to address the developing issue,” he declared.
The President clarified that resources have been made available by the administration to guarantee that those who are at risk receive enough food.
He continued by saying that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) would fly last-mile deliveries, particularly in districts inundated by flooding.
He said, “To ensure Kenyans are safe, we will also mobilize the Provincial Administration and the National Youth Service.”
The President of Kenya urged people to farm and take advantage of the rains in the interim.
In order to help farmers produce enough food for the upcoming season, he claimed that fertilisers at a reduced cost have been made accessible. “We will provide support to farmers when needed,” he continued.
Among those in attendance were Inspector-General of Police Japhet Koome, Chief of Defense Forces Francis Ogolla, Cabinet Secretaries, and Chairperson of the Council of Governors Anne Waiguru.
