Osun State Join NLC Nationwide Strike
After the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) called a statewide strike on Tuesday, students in public schools in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, were instructed to return home.
On the roads and in the streets, pupils from different public elementary and secondary schools could be seen making their way home.
The gate at CAC Grammar School, Gbodofon, Osogbo, was left ajar when pupils exited the school grounds and some instructors could be seen gathering behind a tree to have conversations.
In a similar vein, certain banks in Osogbo declined to accept consumers, while others harbored doubts and only a small number of them opened for business dealings. Few employees were seen entering and leaving the state secretariat in Abere, and the majority of the offices were empty.
Speaking anonymously to the News Agency of Nigeria, a secretariat employee claimed that the strike had not yet begun to take shape and that if it had been similar to earlier nationwide strikes, the secretariat’s gates would have been blocked by NLC and other labor union members.
Remember that on Tuesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, in defiance of a court order prohibiting them from doing so, declared a statewide indefinite strike.
In response to the incident, the Presidency claimed that union strike action constituted a flagrant disregard for the legal system and a disrespect for the judiciary in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy.
As a result, the government voiced its displeasure that any labor leader’s personal interests should not come before the country’s economy and social activities.
