TSC Set To Recruit 20000 Teachers In JSS
To alleviate the teacher deficit in junior schools, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to start hiring more people. According to Commission insiders, at least 20,000 teaching posts will be advertised when this recruitment process kicks off next month.
It is encouraged that prospective teachers who wish to work for the TSC be on the lookout for job postings beginning in February. During the announcement of the KCSE results, TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia acknowledged the acute teacher shortages in junior secondary schools, stating that there is an urgent need for 99,045 teachers, compared to the present figure of 56,928. The shortage worsens with the addition of a Grade 8 class, bringing the total to 42,117 teachers.
President William Ruto reaffirmed the government’s pledge to give the TSC Sh19.7 billion so it may hire more teachers during the Taxpayers Day celebrations in Mombasa. Subsequently, the National Assembly passed a supplemental budget that included these monies. President Ruto highlighted how critical it is to solve the issue, noting that 56,000 more teachers had been hired this year.
The Kenya Kwanza administration, over the past year, has made commendable progress in alleviating the teacher shortage by hiring 35,790 new teachers. Notably, 1,000 were recruited on permanent and pensionable terms for primary schools, with an additional 3,986 interns joining the primary school system. Furthermore, 9,000 teachers were hired on permanent and pensionable terms for junior secondary schools, and an additional 21,365 were recruited as intern teachers for junior schools.
Compared to the previous administration’s hiring policy, which employed about 5,000 teachers a year, this recruitment campaign is a change. In July, President Ruto announced that Kenya is making history by hiring 35,000 teachers this year, with plans to hire an additional 25,000 by August to guarantee that every child in the country has access to a top-notch education.
