45 arrested at Nyege-Nyege festival over criminality
According to authorities, 35 individuals were taken into custody during the just finished Nyege-Nyege festival in Jinja City.
After screening, the suspects are being detained in Jinja’s Nalufenya police station while they await more legal action.
Kiira regional police said in a statement that 45 people were taken into custody on November 10 and 11. Ten of the suspects who had committed minor offenses were just cautioned and let go after screening.
After screening, 20 cases were classified as cell phone theft, 3 cases of posing as police officers, 3 cases of opium possession, 12 cases of falsified admission tickets, and 1 case of theft from a motor vehicle, according to the police.
James Mubi, a spokesman for the Kiira regional police, claims that the celebrations took place at three significant locations: the golf course, the Agricultural Showgrounds, and the River Nile source.
He points out that while some criminal elements were apprehended, most of them exploited small security gaps to cause chaos. According to Mubi, in order to protect attendees and their belongings, police and military forces were largely stationed across the festival site and its perimeter.
Compared to the approximately 86 cases of occurrences that occurred last year, very few incidents were reported this year. Mubi issued a warning to the public, saying that certain people are always plotting to steal items during the celebrations, which include Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the impending royal wedding.
In the meantime, despite terror alerts from major nations, the premier of Busoga kingdom, Hellen Namutumba, praised celebrants for their alertness and continuous connection with security personnel to forestall any type of various instability.
