For the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Examination in 2023, a new grading scheme has been implemented by the Kenyan Ministry of Education. Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, made this declaration at the beginning of the 2023 National Examinations season.
Instead of the prior requirement of five mandatory topics dispersed across three cluster groups, the redesigned grading system simply calls for two mandatory subjects to compute the mean grade.
Mathematics and one language—either English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language—are the two subjects that must be taken. Students also have the option to choose any additional five subjects in which they excel.
The number of students who meet the requirements for admission to universities, diploma programs, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs at the certificate and artisan levels is predicted to rise as a result of this reform endeavor.
The minimum admission standards for preservice teacher education are also being reviewed by the Ministry of Education, in particular for the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE). The updated subject cluster requirements and grades will now be used to determine admission to these programs.
The proposals of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, which aims to integrate technology into education by expanding ICT infrastructure for the curriculum and enhancing digital literacy among teachers, parents, and other stakeholders, are in line with the adjustments made.In order to provide teachers with digital literacy skills they can impart to children, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is also incorporating technology by administering tests to teacher candidates online.
In order to ensure the safe and timely distribution of exam materials to various centers and to safeguard the security of the exam and assessment materials for 2023, the government is also taking steps to regularly monitor weather forecasts.
