Machogu Speaks on Extended School Term
The Process for Extending the Term In light of the impending reopening of educational institutions on Monday, May 13, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has disclosed the plan for making up the two weeks that were lost due to flooding.
Machogu claims that the government will think about extending Term Two by a few days, particularly for Form Four students.
According to the CS, the extension will enable educators and learners to finish covering the entire syllabus before the candidates’ national examinations in the third term.
“The extended closure of schools began two weeks ago. We’ll take a closer look at it, especially for those in From Four, and see if we can extend the term by a few days so that we can heal.
“Students were expected to close for the August holiday for three weeks, therefore, we might minimise the number of days in which schools will be closed,” he said. The original plan was for students to return to class on April 29, 2024.
Nevertheless, the CS moved back the opening dates by one week due to the heavier rains.
However, President William Ruto decided to keep the schools closed indefinitely due to the flooding situation.
The Kenya Meteorological Department’s forecasts and advisories led to a later review of this.
The second term’s school calendar is shown below;
May 13: Following an extended closure, schools across the country reopen. June 20: There is a four-day half-term break for schools. August 5: August holidays are observed in schools (the dates may vary in light of Machogu’s disclosures). August 23: The third term of classes resumes.
