Gas & Petrol Prices Increase Due to Inflation in June

In June 2024, there was a 4.6% inflation rate, which resulted in higher prices for necessities like petrol.

This was stated in the inflation highlights that the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), released on Sunday.

In addition to fuel, the cost of vegetables such as cabbages, kale, and onions went up.

Regarding the price increases, CBK stated that “inflation is calculated as the change in price between June 2024 and June 2023.”

Cooking gas also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) had the highest increase of 4.7 per cent. 

Petrol, diesel and kerosene increased by 4.3 per cent, 3.5 per cent and 1.0 per cent respectively. 

There was a reprieve for electricity users as the prices dipped by 6.8 per cent for 200 Kilowatts and 5.3 per cent for 50 Kilowatts. 

The change in inflation resulted in an average increase in fuel prices of 6.4%.

When it came to food goods, onions saw the biggest price increase of 53.3%, followed by kale, also referred to as sukuwiki, which saw a price increase of 45.3%.

On the other hand, the cost of cabbages went up by 24.2%.

The 2023–2024 calendar year saw a strong rainy season, which caused maize flour prices to drop by 33.2% while wheat flour saw a 10% decrease.

Kenyans who are struggling with high living expenses also saw some relief when the price of sugar fell by 17.7%.
