Machogu Orders Retention Of Learners Already In School
To guarantee their safety and security, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has ordered the retention of students who may have reported to class.
According to him, schools should only let students out of their care return home if they can guarantee their safety.
President William Ruto ordered the postponement of the school reopening indefinitely due to the ongoing rains and flooding, and Machogu responded by issuing the guidance.
Machogu said, “The school administration shall keep them in school and ensure their safety and security, unless the circumstances permit the safe return to their homes.”
Following the confusion on Monday due to the Education Cabinet Secretary’s last-minute decision to postpone the start of classes, some students showed up for class on Monday.
On April 29, at around one in the morning, Machogu released a statement stating that the government had moved the start date of classes by one week because of the persistently heavy rainy weather throughout the nation.
President William Ruto ordered the Education Ministry to make sure that schools stay closed indefinitely due to the current bad weather conditions in his Friday afternoon national address.
“For the remainder of this month and maybe beyond, the rains will continue to increase in length and intensity. Kenya might experience its first-ever cyclone at any time, the speaker warned.
After that, Machogu gave the County Education Boards instructions to call urgent meetings in order to evaluate the state of affairs in their respective regions and provide thorough reports by May 10.
Additionally, he mandated that by May 8th, 2024, school boards of management submit reports detailing the harm that unfavorable weather conditions have caused to school infrastructure and suggest ways to mitigate the damage.
“The reports are essential for interacting with the National Government Constituency Development Fund regarding the repair of the impaired infrastructure, among other things,” Machogu stated.
He gave Field Education Officers instructions to communicate with local National Government Administration Officers in order to quickly find alternate housing for impacted individuals when they are working in areas where schools are housing displaced people.
This is to guarantee that, once the flood crisis situation is mitigated, the facilities will be available for regular learning activities.
The weather agency has projected continued average to above average rains in all parts of the country with flooding in low-lying areas.
Infrastructure including classrooms, dormitories, halls, toilets, latrines, fences and perimeter walls, in various schools have also been destroyed by the devastating floods leading to postponement of schools reopening .
Some schools have been reported flooding while others are being occupied by people who have been displaced by mudslides, landslides and floods.
President Ruto has instructed the Ministry of Education to collaborate closely with the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) in order to secure financial support for the restoration and maintenance of schools that have suffered structural damage.
