The Primary Teachers Certificate Training PTE course, also known as P1 certificate slots, will no longer be offered starting in 2024, according to announcements made by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The diploma level is the starting point for the entry qualification for teacher training, according to TSC.
TSC is also suggesting that a person’s scores in Mathematics and English subjects should be C- (minus) and C plain, respectively, in order for them to be eligible to become a teacher.
After reaching a consensus with the education ministry, TSC committed to presenting the proposal for a review of the teaching requirements in parliament.
The TSC, which is supporting this action, stated that the recommendations of the presidential working party on education reforms as well as the provisions of the constitution serve as the foundation for the new reforms in this sector.
This means that going forward, TSC may not hire teacher with certificate in primary education but instead it will shift its focus to those who have done a degree course .
The commission is therefore urging teachers employed using the above PTE Certificate to upgrade to a diploma to comply with the current CBC requirements.
Currently, the minimal qualification for entering the teaching profession is a diploma in education.
The commission also permits post-training upgrade certificates for individuals who have successfully completed training programs in ECDE, PTE, DTE, BED, DIP ED, and SNE.
TSC suggests that the aforementioned educators receive certification to instruct students in grades 1 through 3 in addition to grades 4 through 6.
