A new Chief Executive Officer is being sought by the Regional Association of Energy Regulators for Eastern and Southern Africa (RAERESA), a specialized agency of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
“RAERESA is seeking to recruit a Chief Executive Officer from any of its member countries,” COMESA declared in a statement that was made public on Friday, May 17.
The role includes a three-year contract that can be extended for an additional three years based on performance. It will be based at the COMESA secretariat in Lusaka, Zambia.
A nine-month probationary period is included in the original contract.
Regarding strategic topics, the incoming CEO will report to the RAERESA Executive Committee, and regarding day-to-day operations, to the COMESA Secretary General.
The position includes a broad range of duties with the goal of furthering RAERESA’s objective to improve regional cooperation and energy regulation.
Included in the responsibilities are managing the RAERESA Secretariat strategically, planning and overseeing the Secretariat’s performance and external commitments, coordinating with stakeholders, managing public relations, speaking up on behalf of members, and acting as secretary to all RAERESA governance meetings.
establishing standards and measuring tools for the energy supply sector, creating policies and plans for the industry, and coordinating and carrying out the plans that the RAERESA members have decided upon.
Initiating and directing energy programs with member states, creating initiatives for information sharing and capacity building, organizing projects for donor funding and assisting in their execution, and strengthening regional and interregional energy regulatory cooperation are among the other duties.
Applicants must hold at least a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as Economics, Engineering, Law, or another energy-related discipline. A PhD is considered an advantage.
Additionally, candidates need a minimum of fifteen years of relevant experience, including at least ten years in senior managerial roles within the energy industry. Extensive knowledge of energy regulation, policy, and legal frameworks is essential.
According to the job advert, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to lead diverse teams, work collaboratively with other organisations, and maintain a high degree of personal integrity and professionalism. Fluency in English, French, or Arabic is required, with proficiency in multiple languages being a significant advantage.
