President William Ruto donated Ksh1 million to Dedan Kimathi University with the intention of using it to fund student entertainment. As a result, each student at the university will receive Ksh180.
In a memo dated Tuesday, April 9, the Director of Students’ Welfare, Esther Nthiga, reported that most students chose to receive a fair share of the donation after public participation was carried out via Google Forms.
The form offered the following options: distributing the funds equally among the students, planning a luncheon, or putting them toward the students’ bursary fund.
Of the students who cast ballots, 51% supported an equal distribution of the funds. An additional 36.5% requested that the school host a luncheon, and 35.5% requested that the proceeds go toward bursaries.
“Following the outcome of the public participation, it has been decided that every undergraduate student during the January-April 2024 semester, including students who are on internal attachment during the semester will be given Ksh.180,” the memo began.
The educational institution additionally instructed all class representatives to notify students in different departments to retrieve the funds from the Directorate.
The school stated, “Kindly note that any uncollected money by Friday, April 19, will be channeled towards the students’ bursary.”
During a visit to the area, President William Ruto made a stop at the university. The Head of State assured the students during his speech that he would provide funds for their entertainment.
“I don’t see that you appear hungry from the way you look. You seem to be doing a great job,” Ruto teased the pupils before saying, The President said, “Just say you want something small; you are not hungry.”
Ruto also gave leaders instructions on how to distribute the funds among the students.
However, Kenyans on the internet have ridiculed the amount given to each student.
Some people are doubting the students’ choice to split the money among themselves rather than planning a luncheon or celebration.
