End of National Schools Status, Gov’t Sets 3 Secondary School Levels

More than 10,000 secondary schools, including national schools, will be reclassified, according to the Ministry of Education (MoE), in order to meet the standards of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).Information suggests that the process of reclassifying schools is anticipated to bring an end to the current national school status, which has resulted in a rush for parents to register their children.

Speaking on Wednesday, Belio Kipsang, the principal secretary in the Ministry of Education, stated that a new three-tier structure is anticipated to be implemented by the new categorization.

The new school category is intended to coincide with the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in senior schools, which is scheduled to begin in 2026.

Early planning, in the opinion of Kapsang, will enable a smoother transition to the anticipated admission of the pioneer grade 8 CBC class, who are now being hosted in elementary school but are currently in junior secondary.

Learners in Grade 8 will go to Senior Secondary in January 2026, in a span of 18 months.

As part of the planning for the transition, the PS has stated that the mapping of institutions has begun and is anticipated to be finished by the following year.

Additionally, Kipsang has indicated that the three new categories stated below will take the place of the previous categories used to classify schools:

  1. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centres
  2. The Humanities and Arts  Institutions (Schools)
  3. The  Creative Arts and Sports institutions (Schools).

However, the PS highlighted that it is expected that the new secondary school levels under CBC will provide a combination of the three streams, giving students the chance to explore a wider range of subjects.

Furthermore, Kipsang pledged to release specific information on the anticipated modifications as soon as they are completed, since stakeholders in education are currently discussing the move to Senior school at KICD.
