Gov’t Alters Half Term Dates on Spur of Finance Bill Protests

Boarding schools are now able to release their students for the half-term holiday, which starts on Monday, June 24, according to the Ministry of Education.

The school calendar has changed on the spur of the moment. The half-term break for the second term was originally planned to start on Wednesday, June 26.

The Ministry of Education clarified that the early departure is intended to provide parents and kids enough time to arrange travel arrangements prior to the scheduled Finance Bill protests on Tuesday in a communication to school principals.

As a result, a few school principals wrote letters to parents asking them to pick up their children starting today; if they don’t, they will only be able to do so on Wednesday.

Students in day schools will be allowed to start their half term break after the close of the academic day today.

Since Tuesday last week, Kenyan citizens, the majority of whom are Gen Zs, have been taking to the streets to reject the Finance Bill 2024 proposals.

On Thursday last week, the protests erupted across the country cutting across cities and other towns among them Eldoret, Nanyuki, and Nyeri among others.

The Ministry changed the dates of the second term’s half term to run from June 26 to June 30 at the end of May.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang stated in a letter at the time that the opening date had to be changed due to the effects of flooding.

“Following the disruption of the opening dates, it has been decided that the half-term dates for term two 2024 be revised,” the memo begins.

“The change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules.”

The calendar had indicated that the half-term time would run from June 20 to June 23 prior to the disaster. Prior to the dates being changed, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu had the schools reopening on Monday, April 29.
