Ministry Starts Inspection In All Schools On KPEEL Status

Under the supervision of a few senior government officials, a sizable technical team has been tasked with confirming the facts and carrying out an evaluation of the Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning (KPEEL) program’s outcomes in schools across the country.

The four-year KPEEL program was implemented in 2022, and the Ministry of Education’s Directorate of Projects Coordination and Delivery will visit a few of the sampled schools to evaluate the program’s progress.

This activity is scheduled to travel to several schools over a period of ten days. The KPEEL effort aimed to increase the retention of girls in upper primary education while reducing the regional disparities in learning outcomes that were then evident.

The program further ensures strengthened systems at the national level to ensure learning for all across the country.According to the KPEEL Project National Coordinator Martha Ekirapa , this monitoring exercise which was under the fourth implementation support mission is expected to be conducted in at least 13 counties.

The exercise started on March 20 and will be completed on 29th March 2024.

According to Ekirapa, technical teams made up of representatives from international organizations would carry out this activity.

Among the participants will be officers from

  •  World Bank
  • UNHCR
  • Other stakeholders under the KPEEL .

After the exercise, the team will be expected to submit their findings for discussions that will be conducted at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development once the mission is completed.

The nation-wide exercise that was carried out in Turkana County began on Thursday in the town of Lodwar.

Among the educational institutions that were visited were the Kakuma refugee camps, where the Department of Refugees services, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other partners, established new schools for the permanently resettled refugee community.

The following counties were included in the review:

  • Turkana, Samburu,
  • Bungoma, Siaya,
  • Kisii, Bomet,
  • Narok, Kisumu,
  • Kakamega, Uasin Gishu,
  • Nakuru Mombasa ,Kwale.

This team’s tasks include evaluating sample schools and compiling data on how the KPEEL program has affected the classroom atmosphere.

School administrators are informed that the allocation of the Sh480,000 funds under the 22022–2026 KPEEL Program will be heavily influenced by Performance for Results metrics.

This suggests that in order for KPEEL money to continue in the future, specific outcomes in schools as identified by specific indicators after an inspection must be achieved.
