Govt Considers New Agency to Facilitate Diaspora Job Placement

The establishment of a Diaspora Placement Agency, tasked with placing Kenyans with jobs overseas, has been suggested by the government.The State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA) has stated that it will control migration in an ethical manner in a draft plan known as the Diaspora Policy 2024.

In response, the government has taken steps to guarantee that overseas employment placements are morally sound, well-organized, and supported by both domestic and international legal frameworks, according to the draft.The organization will also be entrusted with stopping the random and disorganized violations of Kenyans’ rights who work overseas.

According to the draft policy, the placement agency will also be seeking to leverage the demand for the Kenyan workforce in the diaspora.Based on SDDA’s document, Kenyan workers are in high demand because on their skills including; competency, proficiency in English among other marketable traits.

The State Department clarified, meanwhile, that although there was a need for Kenyan labor overseas, there was a backlog in some countries’ approval of Kenyan credentials and accreditations.

To alleviate the bottleneck, the government thus seeks to have Kenyan documents recognized in other nations.

“Through collaboration with the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), support the accreditation and endorsement of Kenya’s qualifications and skills with those of foreign countries for easy access to higher education and foreign jobs by Kenyans living in the diaspora,” the draft states.

The agency’s role would also include creating a system for working with private recruitment associations to guarantee Kenyans get placed overseas.

The government also plans to create a database that will catalog the knowledge, abilities, and experience of Kenyans living abroad.The Kenyan diaspora was projected by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to number 4 million by the end of 2022. The government hopes to raise remittances received from the diaspora to Ksh4 trillion by the same date.
