Student Dead in Car Accident at Igunga Girls’ School

On Tuesday, February 13, three students were hurt and one Form One student died after Igunga Girls’ High School in Vihiga County was struck by a private vehicle. Igunga Girls’ High School is distinct in that courses are located on either side of a tarmac road that runs through the middle of the school. The four pupils in this instance had to cross the road in order to get to their morning lesson.

The dead, who had only been in the school for a term, passed away immediately, while the other three were sent to Mbale Hospital in Vihiga. Three of them were admitted for additional treatment due to severe injuries, while the other two were released from the hospital after receiving treatment.

Superintendent Zimbule of Mbale Hospital said, “Of the three students, two were stable enough to return home, while the other will remain behind for further management of her injuries, as the way she is presenting, indicates severe damage.” Zimbule went on to say that the mother of the deceased had been informed and was receiving counseling from hospital psychologists to help her deal with the terrible news.

“Losing a student is heartbreaking, particularly while they are enrolled in school, and additional information is still pending.” Nevertheless, the county authorities and the school administration were able to get in contact with the parents of the affected pupils,” he continued.

Since it’s in the center of a school, locals in response to the news asked the county administration to install speed bumps on the tarmac.Locals denounced vehicles for speeding and ignoring the road’s closeness to the school and the safety of the students, and police officers in the neighborhood began looking into the event.

Between January 1 and February 11, 2024, 563 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Additionally, the data reveals that, of those killed, pedestrians accounted for the greatest number (216), followed by passengers (109).

The information also showed that, compared to pillion passengers, who documented 54 deaths, drivers only recorded 140 deaths—35 of which occurred as a result of accidents.
