Good news to schools and unemployed teachers
Due to insufficient funding from the government, schools have faced several difficulties this academic year. In order to help meet the needs of their educational institutions, school officials have been forced to explore raising tuition for the upcoming academic year in 2024.
Nonetheless, the administration has some good news for educators and learners ahead of any prospective increase in tuition. To address the various deficiencies in the allocation for the education sector, the government has set aside one-third of a mini budget of Sh 187.3 billion, which represents the first expenditure plan for the year 2023–2024.
Additionally, the National Treasury has recommended extra appropriations totaling Sh 62.1 billion for the education sector. The National Treasury budget states that an additional Sh 5.3 billion would be given to secondary schools, and an additional Sh 4.4 billion will be set aside to make up for any shortages for junior secondary schools (JSS).
Furthermore, an additional Sh 19.7 billion would be given to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in order to support teacher resource management. This suggests that TSC intends to hire more educators in order to alleviate the nationwide teacher shortage that has been made worse by the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The goal of this action is to give job chances to the numerous unemployed instructors looking for work.
