Youth Disqualified From NYS Recruitment Over Tattoos
On Tuesday, young people in Thika expressed their dissatisfaction following their disqualification from the National Youth Service due to body art.The young people said that the only reason they weren’t eligible for the recruitment process was because of their tattoos.
“I was unable to continue with the recruitment exercise as I was disqualified over having a tattoo. I had the tattoo done in high school and back then I didn’t view it as a big deal,” stated one of the aspiring recruits.
He further stated that he regretted not having heeded his parent’s advice, conceding that the consequences of his actions were catching up to him.Speaking to journalists, the young man also appealed to anyone with the know-how to remove tattoos to aid him in getting rid of the body art.
“Now I’m learning what our parents stated back then was true, I am appealing to anyone who can help me remove it,” stated the distraught youth.
In addition to being disqualified due to body art, other local residents stated that they had encountered difficulties since the places listed on the identity documents differed. In order to prevent such expensive mistakes during national identification registration, a youth leader in Thika also asked parents to mentor their kids.
The Thika Stadium hosted the recruitment drive that was supposed to take place on February 5 and 6 in Thika East and Thika West.Though the populated town had more than 100 seats allotted for the recruitment exercise, local leaders also bemoaned a low attendance.
“Thika offered 107 spots, but the attendance wasn’t particularly encouraging. A youth leader observed that the majority of people who showed up were disqualified for a variety of reasons, including having tattoos on their hands, chests, and other body parts; having inconsistencies on their national identification cards; and having poor academic standing.Following the announcement of openings, NYS began recruiting volunteers on Monday.
