Education CS Sponsors Pupil Holding Umbrella for Him
On Wednesday, Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, offered a young student featured in a widely shared photo carrying an umbrella for him a full scholarship for his study. In recounting the events leading up to the incident, CS Machogu revealed that on Monday, January 15, at a bursary issue ceremony at Murang’a County’s Mumbi Stadium, the young kid approached him and volunteered to hold the umbrella for him.
During an education event hosted by a local bank on Wednesday, Machogu revealed, “That small guy insisted on being beside me until I said okay, here is something for you.”However, CS Machogu received harsh criticism from Kenyans of all stripes who questioned if the move was appropriate after the photo went viral.
But now that he’s met the student, the CS has revealed that, because of his lowly origins, he promised to fully support his education.”Because he comes from a background different from yours and mine, I was able to consult with him and help him in the way he wanted,” Machogu disclosed.
The CS added that he also purchased the student a school outfit and a pair of shoes. “Sometimes when you go to places as public figures, you get these needy children, they want to reach the PS, let the PS stand and let the child come and get help as required.” During his speech to stakeholders in education, Machogu counseled other leaders to make a special effort to assist those in need, particularly when they approach them. “Observe children who arrive carrying umbrellas; they may be requesting school supplies, uniforms, or even shoes,” the CS stated.
Speaking at the ceremony, the CS reiterated that school fees in public schools will not be changing and added that the Ministry was striving to make sure the form one admission process runs smoothly.”All of our schools are large enough to accommodate Form One students. Regarding school expenses, principals are well advised,” stated Machogu.
