Court Issues Directive to IG Koome in Omatatah’s Row With Ruto
Inspector General Japhet Koome has been directed by the High Court to permit Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah to make a statement about purported death threats made by President William Ruto. The rulings were made today by Justice EC Mwita in a case that Omtatah filed on December 29, 2023.
A portion of the court ruling stated, “It is hereby ordered that the pleading be served.”IG Koome was further instructed by Justice Mwita of the Milimani High Court to submit a response to the notice within 14 days of receiving it.
On January 24, 2024, the matter will be brought before the court for additional instructions. Omtatah reported that on December 19, he tried to accuse Ruto of threatening to kill opponents of the Housing Levy, but was driven away by police at Nyanchwa Police Station.
He went to the Mosocho Police Station where he was once more chased away after attempting in vain to persuade the officials to let him record a statement. In an attempt to obtain legal recourse and exert pressure on the police to provide him his rights, he consequently turned to the judiciary as a last resort.
Omtatah said in the court filing that Ruto had threatened to kill him and other participants on December 16 at a ceremony in Mosocho, Kisii.Ruto issued a warning that he would not back down from his efforts to fulfill his legacy. As a result, his predecessor gave him a sword that requires him to deal with those who are against the housing levy.
“You know I was given a sword. Do you think it’s for cutting vegetables? It’s for dealing with all these crooks here. I will uproot them completely, and Kenya will move forward,” Ruto stated.
