47 Injured After Bus Overturns in Londiani
When the bus carrying them in Londiani went off the highway and into a ditch, 47 passengers were hurt.
According to a Kenya Red Cross statement released on Friday, the incident happened at about eight in the morning.
Officers from the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) rushed to the scene of the accident and took the injured to Fort Tenan Sub-County Hospital. They worked in partnership with Kericho County Government.
“Forty-seven injured individuals have been swiftly taken to Fort Tenan Sub County Hospital by the County Government,” read the statement by Kenya Red Cross.
“Additionally, seven people escaped unharmed. The scene has been cleared by the Kenya Police.”
The accident occurred along Londiani – Muhoroni Road in Kericho County.
This accident occurs one week after a 62-seater bus involved in another road accident at the same location that resulted in 40 injuries. “40 casualties evacuated to Fort Tenarn Hospital; 4 referred to Kericho County Referral Hospital by County ambulance and well-wishers,” a Red Cross statement said at the time.
The tragic accident occurred nearly six months after 52 people lost their lives on the same location. During the fatal accident that happened on July 1, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured Kenyans that such a tragedy would not be witnessed on the busy highway again.
16 people have died in the last week alone, according to a travel advisory that Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome sent out to drivers and their passengers earlier this month.
Enforcing traffic laws is the mission of the National Police Service. But I want to be clear that as Kenyans, we all have a responsibility to ensure road safety. We have to alter the way we behave when driving,” Koome said.
“Therefore, I am appealing to pedestrians, cyclists, boda boda riders, passengers, and drivers to adhere to traffic rules so that we make this festive season safe for all of us.”
