Teachers urged to upgrade towards education reforms
The government has issued nationwide calls on teachers to support education reforms, stressing the importance of adhering to industry changes. The Director of Teacher Education at the Directorate of Teacher Education, Salome Maina, gave advice to practicing teachers holding certificates in Primary Teacher Education and Early Childhood Development Education about upgrading to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which is one of the reforms.
Speaking at the International Teaching and Training Center’s 20th graduation ceremony in Isinya, Kajiado, Maina, he emphasized that, in line with the current changes, instructors must possess at least a Diploma in the disciplines they teach. In order to ensure conformity with the CBC, she urged individuals holding certificates in PTE and ECDE to enroll in a one-year course to upgrade to a diploma.
Maina also emphasized the significance of instructors adhering to the competencies required of 21st-century educators and registering with the instructors Service Commission (TSC). Citing the TSC Act of 2012 and the TSC Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015), which require the Commission to keep the Register of Teachers up to date, she underlined the accessibility of pertinent policy papers on the websites of the Ministry and TSC.
Recognizing the graduates’ contribution to filling in the holes in the nation’s educational system, particularly the teacher shortage, the director expressed pride in them. Maina also emphasized the government’s dedication to provide every Kenyan equal access to education and recognized the critical role that for-profit colleges play in enhancing academic programs.
She demanded a transparent public-private partnership to guarantee that instruction received from private colleges complies with legal requirements.
