On Saturday, a store owner in Bangale, Tana River County, was taken into custody for peddling fake goods to gullible customers. The 40-year-old merchant was charged with packing sand in branded packages and marketing it as wheat flour, according to a police report.
The culprit supplied seven bales of branded baking floor to an unwary retailer for Ksh11,900, which is how the issue started. The retailer realized he had been duped when he got to his store since the packets felt fairly rough.
When he opened one, there was sand inside instead of wheat flour. Enraged by what they saw, the retailer called the Madogo Police Station. Officers were sent to a rental home in the Adere neighborhood, where they discovered the suspect packing sand in the branded packages. Along with the accused, a 38-year-old male assistant was also taken into custody by police. Further recovery yielded 240 packets in 1-KG amounts.
A portion of the police report stated, “Suspects were arrested awaiting to be arraigned in court.” The occurrence occurs after the authorities released advisories regarding the security of goods offered for sale to the general public. The Directorate of Veterinary Services expressed concerns about chicken meat sold in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) in a letter dated November 6. The letter stated that the majority of the meat sold had not been evaluated by health officials. The director of the organization, Obadiah Njagi, cautioned Kenyans against visiting the establishments as they carry a significant health risk.
Njagi wrote to the county directors, “The major source of this meat is the broiler chicken farmers who slaughter the chicken in their backyard and transport the meat to the hotels.” “This is contrary to Meat Control Act Cap 356 of the Laws of Kenya which states that food animals should only be slaughtered in licensed slaughterhouses under the supervision of an inspecting officer.”
