TSC Reacts to Changing Academic Requirements for Teachers.
On Tuesday, August 22, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) denied widespread rumors that it intended to demote elementary school headteachers without a bachelor’s degree. It also diminished a news report that said TSC had launched a new data collection initiative to filter out teachers with P1 credentials and diplomas.
We want to urge people to disregard this fake article that is going around on social media, according to TSC. The President’s Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) suggested that nursery, primary, and junior schools be overseen by a single principal, which is how the incorrect and misleading report was spread.
Pre-Primary, Primary School, and Junior School will be governed as a one institution under the Comprehensive School System (PP1–Grade 9) to be adopted by the Ministry of Education. PWPER had suggested that the words “Secondary” be removed from the current Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Schools.Teachers expressed concern about the proposal, saying that the reforms will pressure headteachers to advance in their education.
PWPER did not, however, advocate for the promotion of teachers in light of the increased academic standards in its report to President William Ruto.In order to produce and retain effective teachers, the task force recommended that the Ministry of Education, working with TSC, implement a one-year required retooling program for all pre-service training graduates.TSC will also need to hire three deputies for every school, but it hasn’t yet revealed which instructors would advance based on years of service or academic performance.According to reports, the Commission asked school administrators to enter details in an Excel file, such as their highest level of education (P1, Degree, Masters).
TSC assures the public that this request is not intended to reward instructors with the best academic credentials.TSC no longer hires teachers with a primary school diploma and has instituted a new standard of a Diploma in Primary Education.instructors who had been employed with a certificate are urged to continue their education since TSC will no longer hire P1 instructors after 2024.
