TSC CEO Set to Retire Next Year

The possibility of succession has attracted a lot of attention as Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia, the Secretary and Chief Executive of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), prepares to retire in a few months. A succession competition will be held when Dr. Macharia officially retires in June 2025, having begun her terminal leave in March of the following year.

The TSC made it clear last year that, as a State officer as defined by law, Dr. Macharia is exempt from the required retirement requirement, clearing up any previous doubt over the time of her departure. Dr. Nancy Macharia will serve out her whole 10-year term, which ends in 2025, in compliance with the TSC Act and the Constitution, according to TSC Director of Legal, Labour, and Industrial Relations Mr. Cavin Anyuor, despite the fact that she has reached the statutory retirement age of 60 per Public Commission statutes.

Anyuor cited Article 260 of the Constitution for a detailed definition of State officers and quoted Section 16(3) of the TSC Act of 2012, which designates the Commission Secretary/CEO as a State officer. Dr. Macharia, who was born in 1963, has worked in Kenya’s education system for more than 28 years. She was hired through a competitive procedure and took up her current position in May 2015.

Despite facing opposition from stakeholders and educationists, Dr. Macharia renewed her tenure for an additional 5 years until 2025 in June 2020. Throughout her leadership, she has been instrumental in formulating robust policies to streamline the teaching profession and enhance service provision to Kenyan children.

Notably, Dr. Nancy Macharia has been a strong supporter of teachers’ advancement,  constantly pressing the government to provide funding for more hiring of teachers  and their advancement into more senior job categories.
