Kuria fires government employees
Moses Kuria, the cabinet secretary for trade, degazetted the names of 37 KEBS inspectors on Friday in accordance with Section 13 of the Standards Act. The Trade CS stated in his notification that their roles would be terminated as of Friday, September 1st.
Kuria replaced them with 51 substitutes who will act as inspectors in accordance with the Standards Act. The inspectors’ responsibilities under the Act include entering properties to perform inspections and obtaining samples of any product used in manufacturing, production processing, or treatment for testing.
They are free to order the destruction of commodities that have been impounded if they discover that the things are contaminated. The Act stated, in part, that “the Minister may, upon the request of the council (National Standards Council), appoint as an inspector for the purposes of this Act any person who, in his opinion, is suitably qualified.”
Each person so appointed must be a public official or a member of the Kenya Bureau of Standards staff. They must receive a certificate of appointment from the director attesting to the Minister’s authority for them to serve as inspectors for the purposes of this Act. Independent Appointment Willy Kenei was named by Kuria to the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) Board of Directors in the same notice. For a three-year term, the CS appointed Kenei to the office.
The Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry appoints Willy Kenei to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Export Processing Zones Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the first of September 2023, in fulfillment of the authority granted by section 3 (3) (c) of the Export Processing Zones Act, according to part of the notice.
Prior to his appointment, Kenei was chairman of the Uasin Gishu branch of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI).
