China accept more completed goods from Uganda,Museveni asks
The Chinese government has been urged by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to expand market access for completed commodities originating from nations such as Uganda.
“Instead of just focusing on raw materials, I would like to encourage China to open their market more to processed coffee and other products.”
Museveni made the comments at a recent meeting at State House in Entebbe with a team from the National People’s Congress of China, which was led by Luosang Jiangcun, the deputy chairman of the standing committee.
The president stated that Uganda places a high value on the China market since it contributes to the economic growth of the nation in East Africa.
“China had allowed 400 items to enter their country duty-free and without a cap as of the last time I checked. That is crucial since having someone purchase your goods is real support. Africa’s raw material export industry has been problematic since it not only results in lower revenue but also job losses.
It is imperative that China and Africa engage in increased trade in completed goods. This is the main reason for reports that several African nations are experiencing problems. Value addition is necessary for economic growth. Therefore, I urge China to expand its market for completed goods,” Museveni stated.
He also expressed gratitude to Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart, for his support of Africa’s growth.
China has supported Africa ever since the Communist Party of China came to power in 1949. Leaders in China at the time, such as Mao Tse Tung, helped us in our fight against colonialism. Then, even though China was not as wealthy after gaining independence, they continued to assist Africa. After Zambia gained its independence, China constructed the Tanzania-Zambia railway to aid the landlocked country in its struggle against white supremacists in Southern Africa, Museveni recalled.
The president emphasized that China has been collaborating with Uganda for many years as well.
“Several initiatives have been started, such as the rice program in the country’s east, and we have worked closely with China in more recent times. They first assisted us with the construction of the Expressway and two hydro dams totaling 900 megawatts. The Huawei company has also been assisting with numerous other projects, including the internet backbone. Thus, we are delighted with China,” he continued.
