A collision on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway early on Monday morning resulted in the confirmation of ten deaths. The incident, which reportedly occurred at 4 a.m. in the Ngata area along the Salgaa stretch, involved a truck and an eleven-seater shuttle.
Nakuru County Commander Samuel Ndanyi confirmed the tragedy and said it occurred after the matatu and vehicle crashed. The accident also resulted in multiple injuries.
The injured were sent to the Level 5 hospital in Nakuru, where they are undergoing treatment. There have been numerous accidents reported in the Salgaa stretch in the Ngata area, making it a blackspot.
Kipchumba Murkomen, the transport chief, had previously declared that the section will be upgraded in an effort to lower the accident rate. The majority of the accidents involve trucks and public utility vehicles. The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) began building a four-kilometer concrete barrier in June, as per Murkomen’s instructions. Stretching across the train bridge, the barrier runs from Ngata Gate to Ngata Road.
The entire route will eventually be upgraded to dual carriageway status. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reports that between January and June 25, 2023, 2,124 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents.
