New TSC teaching standards
New TSC teaching standards
TSC’s new teaching criteria. The TSC is currently under pressure from teachers unions to establish additional teaching requirements. To the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has made a number of demands.
Lowering the entry-level professional requirements for persons intending to become teachers is one of these requirements. KNUT suggests lowering the current C+ cutoff to a simple C. KNUT asserts that instructors with pedagogical college training have the skills and credentials required to teach at the secondary school level. TSC currently only hires instructors who have earned a C+ in high school.
However, KNUT asked for a reassessment of this mandate for recruiting and deployment. TSC has previously come under fire for its rigid hiring standards, which left many excellent instructors without jobs after graduating. In order to enhance employment options for teachers, particularly those with the ability to thrive in the teaching profession, KNUT pushes for a more open strategy. The government has recently concentrated on implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in an effort to establish a more complete educational system.
This curriculum prioritizes students learning useful information and skills over finding only white-collar employment, equipping them to enter the labor market. KNUT is still hopeful that the TSC will take into account its suggestion to loosen the requirements for hiring university teachers while assessing the CBC.
The union said that putting the policy into place will enhance teachers’ prospects for employment as well as their general educational attainment.
