Governor Nyong’o lands new job
Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, the governor of Kisumu, has been chosen to serve as a UN expert on local governments. The second-term governor made an announcement regarding the new position on Thursday and pledged to carry it out with diligence.
In a statement, Nyong’o said, “I humbly accept my appointment as UN Advisor on Local Governments, assuring that I would do my best to advance the cause of local and regional governments while serving as a member of the Advisory Group.The governor was chosen by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and he will counsel him on topics relating to local and regional governments’ engagement and action.
In his capacity as a consultant, his contributions will aid Guterres and UN Member States in implementing international accords and standards on sustainable development, gender equality, social inclusion, and climate action, among other things.Notably, this is not the Governor’s first appointment outside of the United States.
In addition to the Africa Monitor, the Nelson Mandela Institute for Science, Technology, and the Advancement of Knowledge, and the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA), Nyong’o has served on other international committees and boards.He currently serves as the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa’s (UCLGA) Vice President for East Africa.Locally, the professor has held positions as governor of Kisumu County since 2017, senator of Kisumu County from 2013 to 2017, minister for planning and national development from 2003 to 2005, and minister for medical services from 2008 to 2013.Following the UN appointment of Sports CS Ababu Namwamba just a few weeks ago, Nyong’o was named.
