Turkana Police Reveal New Details on Arrest of KDF Soldiers

Police at Lodwar Station have provided fresh information regarding the altercation that took place there after an altercation with Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers.

After videos of police ordering four KDF officers to sit outside the station appeared online, the incident garnered national attention. KDF soldiers broke into the station a short while later and demanded that their officers be freed.

Turkana Central Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) Samuel Boit oversaw an operation to find the four KDF officers and determine what had happened, according to a follow-up report. A police officer manning a roadblock was allegedly assaulted and disarmed by the KDF officers, according to reports at the time.

The officers discovered the KDF soldiers sitting beneath a tree at Moi Garden in Lodwar, along with a driver operating a water bowser truck, as per the report.

According to the report, the KDF officers were asked to come to the station so they could give statements regarding what had happened.

A portion of the report said, “Their commander, who was wearing a sergeant badge, said that they were not going anywhere.”

The driver also cocked his AK-47 rifle, which caused the police to open fire. To investigate the claims, the officers took them to the station.

The driver reportedly refused to give the keys over, saying he had left them in the water bowser truck at Moi Garden.

Lieutenant Okelo led the operation that resulted in the station being cordoned off shortly after KDF troops on a land cruiser arrived.

When SCPC Boit arrived at the station after the incident, he spoke with Lieutenant Okelo, who gave his troops the order to return to the vehicle so that everything remained under control.

The four KDF officers who were taken into custody stayed behind at the station, refusing to reveal who they were. They were arrested and listed as unknowns on the booking.

The charge of robbery with violence will be brought against them.
