Ministry Of Education Warns All Teachers Against Remedial
In relation to unlicensed remedial classes, the Ministry of Education has previously issued a severe warning to teachers. The practice of offering remedial sessions without a license and charging students for them is only one of the issues plaguing educational institutions that the government has taken a hard position against.
This caution comes in response to comments made by PS Kipsang at a recent event. On September 19, Kipsang addressed a crowd at Shimo la Tewa Secondary School and highlighted concerns regarding these additional teaching sessions, which are frequently passed off as remedial lessons.
He highlighted that teachers can adequately convey skills and information to pupils during the prescribed teaching hours set by the government. He also voiced concern about the financial strain such unapproved classes inflict on parents, casting doubt on such initiatives.
It’s important to note that this warning comes at a time when the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national exams are still being prepared for. The start dates for KCPE and KCSE are set for October 30 and November 3, 2023, respectively, with KCSE ending on November 24.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued guidelines to stop hired professionals, assessors, and examiners from taking part in activities that can jeopardize their roles in order to combat examination malpractice. These instructions stress the value of maintaining anonymity and place limitations on their participation in activities that can result in conflicts of interest or make their identity as KNEC examiners known. In order to maintain the integrity of the exam process, the council has also directed all employed professionals to forgo giving workshops in classrooms.
