Probox Ferrying 13 Students, Driver Arrested

On Tuesday, a Probox automobile transporting students was seized by a multi-agency team made up of representatives from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS).

Officials from the NTSA claim that 13 students were crammed into the five-seater passenger car when it was stopped on the Kitale–Kenguria Road.

The driver who was allegedly breaking traffic laws was arrested as a result of the multiagency team’s prompt involvement.

Additionally, the driver was charged with endangering the lives of pupils who were still looking for a safe way to get to school when classes resumed.

“Car discovered transporting 13 pupils who were seized along Kitale – Kapenguria Road.” The NTSA stated, “The driver has been taken into custody and will face charges.”

The road safety authorities asked drivers to be aware of the traffic laws after the successful raid, particularly when transporting students.

Following the probox driver’s detention, NTSA representatives promptly arranged for the students to have alternate transportation.

The crackdown follows the NTSA’s call for car owners to submit to road safety compliance inspections one day before classes resumed.

All schools are required by NTSA to have a road service license (RSL) that is valid, along with a working speed limiter that is integrated into the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS).

Also, drivers were urged to make sure their school-transport cars had seat belts that worked and that their auto insurance was up to date.

In addition, drivers were instructed to ensure that their cars were not overloaded and that they have the necessary class endorsement on their driver’s license and Public Service Vehicle badge.

“School administration must put in place measures to ensure full compliance with the requirements of the Traffic Act and the PSV regulations,” said the NTSA.

“We urge all motorists to be cautious and mindful of other road users as children go back to school.”
