On Friday night and much of Saturday morning, there were a lot of rumors that President William Ruto had collected votes from schools that had been registered as polling places even though there were none in Baringo County.
This comes following an NTV broadcast that featured multiple signboards in Baringo County depicting schools that were not real.
Kaptiony Girls High School and Kampi Nyasi Secondary School were among the schools featured; their signboards are situated atop a large grazing field surrounded by thick shrubbery.
Following the article, a picture appeared online with the assertion that Kaptiony Girls High School was listed on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) portal as a polling place for the general elections of 2022.
In addition, another image was circulated, showing that out of 50,237 votes cast, President Ruto received 37,635 in the Baringo North Constituency.
Curiously, the image revealed that 36,630 votes were legitimately cast, casting doubt on the accuracy of the count.
It was discovered through a spot check on the IEBC portal that Kaptiony Girls High School was not listed as a polling place.
Only Kaptiony Primary School in Baringo North was registered by IEBC; Kaptiony Girls High School was not.
Baringo’s Kaptiony Primary School is a licensed mixed-day and boarding elementary school.
Five polling places in the Barwessa Ward are depicted in a manipulated screenshot of the IEBC portal that has been circulated online. These are Ayatya Primary School, Bartogo Primary School, Barwessa Primary School, Kaptiony Girls High School, and Chemura Primary School.
But a cursory investigation reveals that Kaptiony Girls High School was substituted for Chebukar Primary School.
Ruto obtained 175,170 votes in Baringo County during the 2022 General Election, or 80.69 percent of the total.
With 41,227 votes, Raila Odinga of Azimio came in second, followed by George Wajackoyah (474), and Waihiga David Mwaure (220).
