Students with Exam Cancellation Offered Opportunities to File an Appeal

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has extended an opportunity for appeal to students whose national exams were canceled. The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms’ Kenya National Examinations Council (Amendment) Bill, 2024, encapsulates this.

The Bill states that disgruntled students have 30 days following the publication of the results to file an appeal against the cancelation.”Partially, the Bill states that a candidate whose examination results have been cancelled may apply to the Council for a review of the Council’s decision within thirty days after the results are released.”

In contrast to the past, when students sought justice through the legal system, KNEC will now consider written pleas from candidates who feel wronged. The purpose of the review must be clearly stated by the students.

The Bill also states, “The Council shall consider an application upon receipt and  respond, in writing, to the applicant within thirty days.”

The explanation for the Council’s decision to deny the students’ request for review  will be provided as a courtesy. The student will get written notification of the  decision if the request for review is granted. In addition, the applicant must appear before the council for evaluation within  ninety days after the application being accepted by KNEC.

The Bill suggests that “the Council shall release the results to the candidate where the Council is satisfied that the candidate has not been involved in any examination irregularities.”

Before the Bill is brought to Parliament for discussion, the public is now invited to participate.
