In order to force the eviction of at least 80 families from the land in Nyama Villa Estate, Kayole, a private developer is asking the court for a demolition order. An official from Muthithi Investments clarified on Sunday that only 80 homes will be the target of the destruction.
The official said that once a court determined that the owners were the land’s legitimate owners, they had signed a land sale agreement, but they had not followed through on it. According to the investment company, the 80 houses had not complied with the terms of the payment arrangement.
An executive from the corporation said, “We will demolish the house of the 80 not because we want to, but because we have had enough.” In 2018, former President Uhuru Kenyatta persuaded the developers to reach a settlement with the homeowners, putting an end to the land’s demolition process.
After Uhuru intervened, the firm split the land into a minimum of 304 pieces and demanded payment from the occupants. Nevertheless, a few residents have not followed through. “120 of the occupants are continuing with their payments as agreed upon,” he stated. The 20 acres of land in question have been the subject of legal disputes for more than ten years.
Innocent buyers have been losing their land as a result of an increase in land grabbing cases across the nation.
Early this month, the government bulldozed the dwellings on East African Portland Cement Plc (EAPC Plc) land in Machakos, leaving the residents to lament their losses.
If a settlement is not achieved by December 2023, other occupants of the land that belonged to the late businessman Gerishon Kirima may also face eviction.
