Two men were burnt to death for allegedly storming a funeral and robbing mourners in Mombasa.
Working in a group of nine, the gang, armed with pangas and weapons, is said to have attacked members of the public at a fundraising event and ran away with cash as well as other valuables.
In the process, one mourner sustained injuries while others lost their phones, laptops and musical instruments.
Three vehicles were also vandalised as the thieves made their way out.
Acting in rage, the mourners launched a manhunt for the perpetrators capturing two accomplices who were subsequently burnt to death.
Police officers reporting to the scene found that their bodies had been burnt beyond recognition.
“Malicious damages were documented and recorded for the incident. A portion of the police report from the incident said that two bodies had been burned beyond recognition by the time officers arrived at the scene.
Police said in a press release that the two suspects’ bodies had been brought to the mortuary at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in anticipation of an autopsy.
In the meantime, a manhunt was started by the authorities for the remaining seven gang members.
This event comes after a mob attack on December 31 in Kirinyaga, following the lynching of alleged livestock thieves.
While on patrol, the two were discovered ferrying cows in a truck by locals. While the two who were cornered were burnt to death, several were able to flee.
