Moi University Releases Strict Dress Code Guidelines

According to Moi University’s Code of Conduct, students will have to follow new, stringent dress code requirements. In an internal memo dated Tuesday, February 6, Dean of Students Dr. Alice Mutai informed students that the dress code will be strictly enforced going forward, prohibiting items such as low-cut blouses or dresses, ragged or torn jeans, skin-tight pants, miniskirts, and tumbo-cut t-shirts.

Others include; micro shorts and transparent dresses or attires that show bra straps or sleeveless t-shirts as well as t-shirts with obscene writing.Sagging trousers, clothing that reveals the chest, slippers, crocs and all plastic shoes that are not official wear were also included in the list of clothing banned in the university.

Mutai expressed alarm over the instruction, pointing out that it came after complaints about the pupils’ inappropriate clothing.”I wish to bring to your attention Article 3.1.1 a, c, d and e of the Rules and Regulations Governing the Conduct & Discipline of Students,” Mutai said.

“The Students are expected to dress decently in modest and appropriate attire. However, we have observed and noted with concern the indecent dressing by some of you,” she added. The dean noted that stern disciplinary action would be taken on students caught defying the code of conduct. Further, varsity staff members were directed not to serve students who did not adhere to the laid guidelines.

“All students should desist from inappropriate dressing while at the University as this may result in disciplinary action. This is therefore to request all Students to dress decently and Staff are requested not to serve students who are dressed indecently,” she added. The institution joins the University of Eldoret (UoE) and Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) in enforcing the student dress code regulations.

The University of Edinburgh outlawed cross-dressing in January 2023 and promoted modest clothing standards. After LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba, one of its alumni, passed away, the instruction was issued.A few weeks prior, KeMU had also sent out a message enforcing the rules that required students returning from breaks to follow. These included the prohibition of wearing skirts that covered the knees, dreadlocks, plaited hair, earrings, and tops that showed off one’s navel.
