The University of Nairobi (UON) has instructed students to use the government’s eCitizen platform to pay for their meals. The administration informed 12 of the institution’s kitchens through a notice that the modifications were in compliance with the government’s order regarding service payments.
“All payments to the University of Nairobi must be made via the eCitizen platform, per government mandate. The notice states, “The university has developed procedures to enable clients to make payments in compliance with this mandate. Ramesh Saxena, the governor of the Faculty of Health Sciences, told us that the treatment was free, despite rumors circulating online about a Ksh50 service charge.
“There are no extra charges. The first day it was rolled out I did not pay for any extra cost,” Saxena, a student leader stated. “We are using the pay bill system, the only difference is it’s a government pay bill, to centralise the payments.”
Students must now use the government’s pay bill number instead of the old ones, according to systems designed to help customers make mandatory payments.
“Go to M-Pesa, choose the Pay Bill option under Lipa na M-Pesa, enter the account number based on the kitchen outlet’s identifier name, and use the Pay Bill number 222222,” the alert states. After that, the customer will enter their PIN and the amount they must pay for the meal, and the money will be deposited into a centralized paybill.
Some of the kitchens included in the new system are the Upper Kabete Kitchen, Kikuyu Kitchen at the Kikuyu Campus, Kenya Science Kitchen at the main campus, Kenyatta Medical School Kitchen at the Kenyatta National Hospital Campus, Comcare Cafe at the KNH Campus and Central Catering Unit at the main campus.
Among the others were the kitchens in Women’s Hall, Chiromo at the Chiromo Campus, Parklands at the Parklands Campus, Lower Kabete at the Lower Kabete Campus, Mamlaka Kitchen along Mamlaka Road, and Kitchen One next to the Students Clinic. The centralized pay bill number, 222222, was introduced by the government in 2022 as a unified platform for service payments to public organizations.
