School Closed After Fire Guts Dormitory

On Thursday, St. John’s Girls Secondary School in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, was closed due to a fire that destroyed the school’s dormitories.The incident on Wednesday, which happened at around 8 p.m. when the students were in their evening classes, left them counting their losses.

Paul Katana, a member of parliament from Kaloleni, stated during his commentary on the sad event that he had consented with the school administration to release the pupils in order to relieve their panic attacks.

“This school was on fire, I was called about eight o’clock in the evening yesterday. Even though I was in a meeting with other MPs, I managed to get in touch with the headteacher and verify the occurrence. “I would like to commend the County Government for their endeavor in dispatching a fire department to put out the fire,” said Katana.

“The students are traumatised a bit, we have allowed them to go and stay with their parents. Meanwhile, we are making some arrangements to have a makeshift dormitory. As you can see everything has been destroyed,” the MP added.Katana who confirmed zero fatalities, stated that the students are expected back in school anytime from next week.

Along with the firefighters and locals, police officers who had arrived on time to the scene also assisted in extinguishing the fire.Although the exact origin of the fire is yet unknown, investigations have started to find out more information.Similar events occurred on January 13, when an inferno destroyed two dorms at Nyakoiba Mixed Secondary School in Kisii County, forcing the suspension of classes. When the tragedy struck, locals reacted quickly and assisted in putting out the fire. County firefighters arrived shortly after.

Ten million Kenya Shillings worth of property, most of which belonged to students, was destroyed. Still, there were no reported injuries.Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere addressed the issue, expressing concern over the rising number of school fire incidents and encouraging cooperation in order to prevent such occurrences in the future.
